To Start out you need get the Mac open. You need a specialized piece of equiptment affectionally called a Mac Cracker.
[This tool was created with two BicŪ pens and the appropriate sized hex bit.]
Remove two hex screws from here using your "offical Mac Cracker".
You need a long shaft, it seems Apple only wants certified Apple technicians working on Apple's products.
Remove the two bottom screws as shown. (NOTE: if you are opening a MAC Plus systems you have to take one extra screw out from the CMOS battery compartment)
Now pull back on the cover. The inside of the Mac should look something like this. If the cover does not come off, you may need to use a flat edge screwdriver to pry the cover open
This thing is the "yolk". If your system has been on recently, this can be charged with high voltage (as the label indicates). Ground a long screwdriver and touch it to the contacts under the red suction plastic to de-charge the yolk.(you may need to remove the contact from the tube)
Now what you want to do is disconnect the Hard Disk, Floppy Disk and Info Cable (tricky)from the System Board. Next lift up and pull out the system board 1/2 way so you can disconnect the speaker wire.
There are 4 screws pictured here which are important to get out the two visible ones on the bottom, upper left, and the HD/FD rack screw.
Now that you have removed the screw(s) on the bottom of the FDD/HD rack, you can lift up and remove both the Hard Disk and Floppy Disk together. If your HD is of respectible size or you want to save the data on it, Unscrew the HD and keep it.
[This Quantum SCSI HD is only 40mb]
Now on to the final steps.. Remove the monitor screws. and carefully place the monitor somewhere where it won't break. [If the monitor works save it for another Mac since this part goes frequently]
You are almost done with the system. All that left to do is to remove the speaker from the bottom left (under the apple logo).
